It is high time Nigerian film makers began to do wide consultation on areas of their scripts that have to do with a particular profession. This goes a long way in determining the quality of their outputs. Our film industry should go beyond mere entertainment. It should be both entertaining and educative. The quality of some Yoruba films, for instance, shows that it is either the film directors do their work in haste or they simply do not deem it necessary to consult professionals whose roles their actors act in their films.
A good example to illustrate the above observation is a particular Yoruba film ( title withheld) I watched recently. In that film, a prominent monarch, who feels his image is tarnished by a publication made by a young man in the media, reports him(the young man) to the police. The police arrest and detain him. Even when the monarch and the police officers involved confirm it to be a case of defamation of character, this guy is still kept in police custody after arrest.
In law, a case of defamation of character, be it libel or slander, is outside the jurisdiction of the police and it is out of place for the police to arrest or harass a person accused of defamation.Defamation can only be redressed by the plaintiff instituting a civil action in court for award of damages against the defendant in favour of the plaintiff. It is not a criminal matter which which is the business of the police to investigate.
Thank you for your attention.
See you tomorrow.
