DO YOU KNOW THAT THE IMMUNITY ENJOYED BY THE GOVERNORS OF THE STATES OF THE FEDERATION OF NIGERIA UNDER OUR CONSTITUTION IS NOT ABSOLUTE?

Section 308 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria gives immunity to the President and the Vice - President, the Governors and their deputies.The essence of this constitutional immunity is that no civil or criminal proceedings shall be instituted against them during the tenure of their offices.

However, section 188 of the same constitution still gives the Chief Judge of a state a power to appoint a seven- man panel at the request of the Speaker of that State House of Assembly to investigate any allegation of misconduct against the governor of that state signed by not less than one third of the members of the State House of Assembly. If found guilty, by the panel,the governor of that state shall stand removed from office as from the date the report of the panel is adopted by not less than two-thirds of the total majority of the members of the State House of Assembly.
