As a follow-up to my yesterday's post,the the Nigerian Criminal Code also forbids another practice among those in the Southwestern part of Nigeria but which is still part of the people ' s tradition till today.

Section 370 of the Criminal Code prohibits marriage to another person while a statutory marriage is still subsisting but, despite this, we still see people breaking their statutory marriage covenants not to marry outside wedlock while their statutory marriages still subsist. You see elites even male judges being responsible for pregnancies outside wedlock.

The reason for this is simple.African tradition promotes polygamy. These are only Africans contracting statutory marriages.Before they know it, they break their marriage vows which they cannot keep.Why can't they restrict themselves only to African customary marriage? Why must they copy the people in the foreign lands at the expense of their own culture.

It is important to note that this offence in section 370 of the Criminal Code has seven years imprisonment attached to it and the most ironical thing about it is that nobody in Nigeria has ever been charged with the offence let alone being convicted for it.
